  1. Dear Mr. chu:
YES, I CAN”!
    thank you again,jason

  2. Dear Michael Lee:

Of course, I remember you. I also remember your girl friend is the luckiest person in the world: To have a boy friend video tape my talk so they can share together.

I am really impressed by your recap of my talk. You are the reason that i spent my time with young friends. I decided not long ago that I want to spend more time to young friends and not waste my time on adult who understands everything i said but fail to take any action to change themselves.

Please take action, even the small steps.

By the way, you are so right. My one dollar was invested in you and you will pass on this one dollar to your girl friend and she will pass on to her friends dollar…. You have reminded my about the pay forward to movie. My NT$7,000.00 was not wasted and become alive. As you wisely pointed out, actually with more people like you, I will have more money in my remaining life. I am the richest person when I die. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Thank you for this epiphany moment.

    Be the change,

    Ping

  3. Dear Eartha:

Fist, allow me to apologize for this late reply. I was so touched by your short comment and I simply want to crystalize to response to you and then, I forgot it to do it.

I am so happy for you for your own Aha moment. It is important that you find the connection by your own realization.

Actually, love what you do is a way to create your own luck and learn to find meaning in everything you do. This is an important discipline to master.

I always tell young people to start to re-examine why they buy, what they buy, how they spend time first before jumping into the Cultural Creative Business bandwagon.

You need to become a mindful consumers with an eye on substance and aesthetic sensibility. What kind of shampoo you purchase will also indicate your lifestyle preference. It is never so difficult to tell if you are really into this lifestyle.

Having said this, I want you not to worry too much about the current situation. It is a necessary process to reach the mature and sophisticated cultural creative lifestyle.

I, personally, am hopeful that this generation will have more courage to step out of the what’s good for me mentality. I already see more young people who want to live a meaningful life, instead of becoming a stock option rich employee and working day and night engineer. Suddenly, people realize happiness is the ultimate currency.

Dear Eartha, please enjoy the time you have with yourself. Focusing on things that you can control.

    Love,

    Ping

  4. Dear Jason:

Of course, we need money to survive. I never advocate to stay home and do nothing.

When you are in a discontinuity, you are in the best position to find new possibility.

I remembered long time ago I have told a young man who lost his job and could not find a job for a long time.

In you case, it is so clear that you need the money and cannot wait. Here are the steps you need to try:

    1. Reduce you living cost in half or to the minimum. You should rent a cheap house in a cheap area and eat at home, stop buying any non-essential things.

    2. Find two or three jobs that you always want to do , even work for free. Now, you have this chance to apply these jobs with more creative ways. You can offer the new solution to improve their sales or services with your written proposals. You can ask for a five minutes interview after your submit the proposal to help these companies to find new market or save more money. You just keep pushing on and offer to work for free for three month and they can decide if you can add value to their companies. You are willing to do this because you are convinced that you can make positive contribution to them.

    3. You also can work as a dish washer, waiter, construction worker or any jobs that no one want to take. You are working an honest job for an honest income. if you need money, you need to work hard on it with your own labor and pride. You create your own luck by love what you choose to do.

Jason, no one can help me except you, yourself.
Whining and talking will not change your situation.

    You can do it.

    Be there,

    Ping

  5. Dear Sophie:

I think you know my answer to my daughter already.

The point is not what I would do. I also want to tell you that the problem is not your parent. It is you who allow them to over-protect you.

Thank you for writing to me and share your fear and your frustration in dealing with this emotionally charged situation. I have to give credit to you to reach out to me.

Well, by raising this question to me, you have made the first step. Now, it is up to you to decide what you want to do. If it is not now that you can live a life that you choose to, then when?

I always tell people it is the how, not the why, that we need in order to breakthrough. So here is the script that I would use if I were you:

Dad and mom, I know you love me and want the best for me. I also know you want nothing from me except to have a happy life. I know you would be worried by my traveling alone. I understand it completely. However, I have given it some thought and I have made up my mind that i would travel to……. by myself so I can get to know myself better. I need this time for myself. I am not asking approval from you. I am letting you know my decision. I promise you I will call you everyday so you will know where I am and how I am doing on this trip.

Dad and Mom, I know you will be feel hurt that I go against your wishes. However, you will be happy to know that your daughter finally grows up and wants to take the responsibility for my life.

Sophie, you need to take action, just do it. You need to have the courage to face the guilt trip that your parents have played on you for so long. It does not mean you are not a good daughter. It does mean you are a responsible adult and a free spirited soul.

Write to me and let me know how it goes.

    Love and hug,

    Ping

  6. Dear Mr. chu:
    thank you ,jason

  7. Dear Mr. Chu,

    I’m a girl…almost 30…(then calling myself a “girl” would be very inappropriate…:))
but have never traveled alone…even just in Taiwan…not to mention abroad….

I need to know one thing…and really need to know your answer to this…since you are also a parent…

“WHEN YOUR DAUGHTER TOLD YOU THAT SHE REALLY WANTED TO TRAVEL ABROAD ALONE…WOULD YOU LET HER GO…WITH GREAT SUPPORT… AND WITHOUT ANY WORRY OR ….ANY NEGATIVE REACTION?”

“NO!!” was the direct and quick answer from my parents when they heard about this thought…well…they were scared…

I know their “nono” is not about that i would do something bad…something naughty…(I had no bad record at all…)
They are just afraid so much that something bad would happen to me…worry about my safty….

Even when i promise everything…they just never let me try….

    How did you do it..?
    How can i do it…?

    Thank you!!

  8. Dear Jeff:

    Thank you for your participation.

Could you be more specific on your question?

It is always the experience that can tell the brand awareness. You don’t buy brand, you buy the authentic experience.

Have you been Canmeng Aveda store, salon, spa or network salons before? What do you think about our service and your purchase experience? Have you purchased any Aveda products before? What is your usage experience on Aveda products. Have you known anyone from Canmeng Aveda? Have you been Nonzero restaurant? Have you read all my blog’s comments? Have you been Canmeng Aveda office and Canmeng Institute in Taipei? Have you heard any comments from other cosmetic industry or beauty professionals? Have you asked any beauty editors from fashion magazines? Do you have any friends using Aveda products? What do they feel about Canmeng Aveda? Have you googled me, Canmeng Aveda and Nonzero?

All these ” experience ” are part of the total Canmeng Aveda awareness. You simply cannot put it into a simple mission statement or brand positioning.

We have to live our mission.

The authenticity is the name of the game. it is not just the products, it is what behind the products, mostly, who are these people behind the brand.

Let’s vote with what we buy and we will see what kind of society we are creating.

By the way, Canmeng Aveda is still changing and learning. We are still having challenge to become a better company. We are no near to what we want to be and where we want to go yet.

    Thanks,

    Ping

  9. Dear Fred:

Thank you for your kind words.

Books that I mentioned at my talk are:

Tipping Point, Blink and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. All three books have Chinese translation. I still recommend you to read the English edition so you can learn English and some important simple key words that you will use in your profession.

Ripple Book《漣漪詞》 by Tan Yee Ming. This is a book written by my partner in Hong Kong. It is a book that will help you to reframe your mind so you could be on a journey to bring out the best in you.

Life as a Daymaker 《悅日人》 by David Wagner. You can buy this book at Canmeng Aveda store.

    Happy reading,

    Ping

  10. Dear Fion:

I think you already know the answer by taking this action to talk to me.

I am not the one who can answer your question.

Please remember that you will never waste any time when you are expanding your comfort zone and live a life of your choice.

We seldom regret the things we did. We always regret the things we did not do.

    Be true to yourself,

    Ping

  12. Dear HC:

I am so sorry that I took so long to reply to your intriguing question.

Please read this week’s Newsweek, April 6/April 13, 2009. The cover story is about the savvy shopper buys less but spends more in hard times. A very interesting story about the case for luxury.

OK, the concept of we vote with what we buy is really simple. To remind people that they can make a difference in the world. This is borrowed from Mahatma Gandhi’s wisdom: Be the change you want to see in the world.

If you want a better society, you need to become a better shopper too. You should buy from a company whose values are a representation of yours. You are not buying things just for the discount or saving a few bucks, but buying the values behind the bottles or boxes. If we are discount oriented shoppers, we are going to have a discount society. We are a short term and scarcity oriented society. We will have no future to become a world class society.

I know it is hard to ask people to practice this noble and responsible consumerism in good time, and even so in this difficult time when we really don’t have too much to spend or have fear in our future. Then, the 1% philosophy, hopefully, can serve as a positive excuse to do this socially responsible shopping one out of 100 occasions. It should be easier for people to do things that they feel proud of.

People will definitely buy value or buy something that they can pass on to their children with durable quality and timeless design.

Let’s support those companies that treat their employees right, pay tax and participate in social causes: performing art, global warming, AIDS, poverty, water conservation, biodiversity, indigenous culture, sustainable small farm…..

I really want to start a business based on this concept and build a community of like minded people so I will have a platform to either support or banish the companies who do not behave in a responsible way. Once we create an ecosystem with group purchase power, I believe we can become a movement to reset our society’s value and make sure the right people and right company can survive and contribute more meaningful jobs for our children.

How many people are willing to join me for this vision: a for-profit social enterprise funded by social entrepreneur and Eco entrepreneur with the support of social consumers and Eco consumers? In essence, it is an ecosystem that can sustain our social calling and social purpose.

If you are buying Aveda or eating at Nonzero restaurant, you are voting with what you buy already. The next phase is to become an advocate for Aveda and Nonzero. You are the volunteers for Canmeng Aveda and Nonzero so you can make a difference in Canmeng Aveda and Nonzero’s survival or success.

The same goes to your own company. You should brazenly promote and demand your customers to support you if you believe you have done your work and earn the respect and loyalty from your customers. People love to help people who help themselves first.

Good luck. It is a good feeling to have a VIP like you in Canmeng Aveda.

    Be the change,

    Ping

  13. 昱仁 dear:

Thank you for your hug, I need it.

    1. I remember the advice I gave to my daughter when she got her first job at Pizza Hut as a telephone order taker: Show up at work 10 minutes earlier and leave the work 10 minutes later. This is it. There is no secret to become a successful people. Love what you do and you will do what you love. Thanks for KL from this community ( please check the previous Q&A ), I decided to write something about this on PPaper Business 04, will be published on May 5th, 2009.

    2. I simply want to go to abroad and see the world. To get a master degree in clinic pharmacy ( the newest thing in 1974 era ), is the only way to go to abroad in 1974. I have set my mind to go abroad since I was in junior high school. This is why I was a bad student, but never so bad to ruin my grade to be able to get I-20 or admission to graduate school in the States. Now, you see, you need to plan and be ready to pay the due if you want to accomplish anything. Continue success is never an accident.

Please remember the first rule to happiness is to live a life you choose to, love to and want to, never have to.

Love, You made my day by quoting the 漣漪卡肯言 RippleCards.

  14. Dear

    創意就是要take a risk!
    we vote forwhat we buy至於肯夢的企業理念,

LOVE YOU DO ,NOT DO YOU LOVE,really shock, but you are right.

  17. Dear Ping,

First of all, appreciate that you always share us your fabulous thoughts. Can you share me more about “we vote with what we buy”

I’m very lucky that i got fully support from the senior managers in my company to initiate projects to combat climate change. Besides the waste management and energy saving, I wanna to promo the concept of smart shopping. More specifically, I plan to share the concept -“we vote with what we buy”, with my colleague.

I read the article about this topic that you published several days ago. Regarding “1%” concept, it’s more practicable and therefore I will definitely share this with my colleagues : ) In addition, I will use figures to show the impact of our daily shopping behaviours.

However price is the most important factor to some people and they may even reject the 1% concept.

I do like this concept-we vote with what we buy. thus, really wanna grab the opportunity to impact more to do so. would you mind share me more about how to influence more in this matter?

by the way, just share some things. first, i do very happy to implement this project although this project is almost non-related to my normal work. second, as a frequent customer in Aveda, I do wanna to thank you to cultivate so many daymakers to enrich my life : )

    regards, hc

  19. Dear

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Outliers. I have left some comments on your blog.

Outliers is a book intended for American readers. In our Chinese culture, we are familiar with the impact on our life by right time, right place and right people. There is nothing new.

However, Malcolm Gladwell has reminded us that we also can create our own reality by seizing the moment.

The most heartening insight is the 10,000 hours rule. This is so true that no continuous success is accident. All successful people have paid their due. Most people just did not know it.

Please imagine if we change the cut off time to two: January 1st and July 1st. We may give more children opportunity to become great hockey players. If we change the system, we may have different outcome. This is how we should think after reading any book. What if……

Let’s read good book so we can grow together.

    Ping

  20. Dear Viva:

Please note that next phrase that I mentioned after ” don’t judge people ” comment.

” Don’t judge people, judge their decision. ”

With this discipline, we always leave people a good reputation so they can bounce back.

It is not easy to change our judgmental mentality. Our education and our culture have failed to inspire us to accept that we are all human and we all made stupid mistakes.

This is why we need to practice this new way to look at things. With many years practice, you may nurture yourself a more kind and gentle way to people.

Please don’t worry if you cannot change your value system overnight. I am still working hard on my own discipline.

I usually practice self talk ( RippleCards ) to remind myself of this conventional and animalistic instinct: to blame people and to judge people.

” Ping, have you noticed that you are judging people again. Yes, I can practice non-judgmental and become a better person. ”

This is my self talk. I highly recommend you to practice this.

Thank you for willing to improve yourself every day.

    Love,

    Ping

  21. Dear Chu~

Thank you for reminds me “don’t judge people“.
These few days, I try to understand about `judge`.

    Judge

    Thank you~

    VIVA

  22. Dear KL

Thank you for your intriguing question that has been a dilemma for generations of people. You are not the only one.

I may write something on my next PB column and you will know that you are the one who prompts me to think more about this universal question.

Now, let me give you a simple question to ask of yourself.

Love what you do vs. Do what you love.

    Which one is more important?

You should be proud of yourself by being honest with yourself. However, you need to take full accountability of living the life you choose.

I am certainly not the one who can help you. You are the only one who can help you by making the tough decision and learn the lesson by yourself.

    Ping

  24. Dear Pao:

    Thanks for your prompt posting.

Now, we know all stories have two sides. We need to be open minded and not getting into finger pointing too early. The only way to resolve mis-understanding is through active and transparent communication.

I still want to thank Cathy to voice her concern and frustration in this blog so Pao can have a second chance to win her back.

I am sure PPAPER Business will continue the journey to re-define what a magazine could do to people’s imgaination and learning. We will be all here to support you.

Thanks for Pao’s action to win back our loyalty. Pao also demonstrated with his writing on how to engage with complaint.

It is a great lesson. Thanks to Cathy and Pao.

    Other people matter,

    Ping

  25. Dear

    Thank you for your info.

Well, I agree with you that it is inhumane to kill dolphin for any reason. However, I do have reservation on imposing our own values upon different culture, no matter how righteous it is.

We can use all measures under our power to convince these people stop killing dolphin. However, I don’t think it is the right thing to do to wage your protest in trespassing other people’s country.

There must be other way to engage with these people and find a solution to save the dolphin and the local tradition.

Violence also begets violence. There will be more dolphin killing if we did not take this matter more sensitively.

If we stop eating shark fin soup, our children will stop eating shark fin soup. It all starts from us, you and me.

    Love,

    Ping

  26. Dear Cathy:

This is Pao, founder of ICB and PPAPER BUSINESS.
I saw your letter about the troubles you had encountered
on ICB refund. Please accept my deep apology
    and offer you a explanation.

ICB was funded by PMI and PPTWO. We decided to
closed down PPTWO after 3 years of break even and little profit.
It was a sudden decision in December 2008 and we want
to do all we can to be fair and professional to our ICB subscribers.
PMI and us are giving full refund to all the subscribers
at the earliest notice. Of course it will cause inconveniences.
I hope you forgive us for any delay due to final settlement
    between PMI and me.

We took a hard soul searching and courage to carry ICB
forward as PPAPER BUSINESS in Feb, using our own money.
We believe this world needs better social and business
values as well as insight to creative business. And we are
very happy to know that PPAPER BUSINESS has a wonderful
start which sold out in 7 days and we had to make 2 reprints
    to keep up the demands.

You have every right to be upset and judge us. The integrity
of any business can be damaged with one wrong doing. And
sometimes it takes 10 years or longer to make a fair judgement
on someone or a company. We have been doing honest business
for over 15 years, and will continue to do so, to stand test of time.
I hope you can come to my shop and I will love to make up
to you with free books and gifts for all your troubles. And I
hope you will continue to support PPAPER and PPAPER BUSINESS.
    I wish you well.

    Sincerely yours,
    PAO

  28. Dear Cathy:

First of all, I want to thank you for letting me know this unfortunate thing. I will definitely forward your comments on this blog to Mr. Pao and his team. If I were you, I would be frustrated and upset too. I am so sorry to hear about this.

I really have no idea what has gone on in the transfer of subscription from ICB to PPaper Business. Normally, any magazine would love to continue the subscription from the old format to new format. I guess ICB must have some special circumstances that they have to terminate the ICB subscription and make the refund separately.

When I terminated my baby ONENESS magazine last year, my team did it so swiftly with immediate refund and a personal letter from me apologizing for the inconvenience. I lost a lot of money but I gained the respect from my subscribers.

It is easy to answer your question: When integrity is in question, no business can sustain forever. It is just a matter of time that they will pay their due. Beauty/aesthetics/design is intimately related to authenticity. When integrity is compromised, there is no authenticity, therefore, beauty is also compromised.

Now, you know how easy to lose a loyal customer. This is what wakes up me in the night too. If we did something wrong and made a stupid mistake, we may ruin our 12 years reputation.

Please contact ICB/PPaper Business again. Please give them a chance to win you back.

Please say three times and you will get to know yourself better. 🙂
