Dear Yu Tzu:
How can I thank you for being a true friend of Nonzero!
Our waiter’s remark was not only inappropriate but also unnecessary. I have to admit that we really did not have a more professional training on the professional etiquette and hospitality. I will ask my team leader to initiate a training immediately.
Nonzero is an experiment to see if we can create a space where Nonzero can become a Third Place where people take ownership and become a tribe of positive emotion. This is why we call Nonzero my place, my kitchen.
Apparently, we are not there yet. It will take more guest like you to tell us what we need to improve so we can grow together.
Taipei is a most underrated city. Let’s work together to tell the world that Taipei may not be the prettiest city in the world, however, Taipei has a group of committed citizen who still want to make a difference.
Thank you for being a friend to me.
Shining eyes.
Ping
Dear Mr.Chu,
Good evening. This is a letter from your customer who came to your NONZREO restaurant .We are students who just come back from Australia and have a vacation here in Taiwan . My friend and I liked the design of your restaurant very much and enjoyed our food and time in your restaurant. NON-ZERO is a very beautiful place,I believe that this wonderful place must attract many people!
However, there is only one thing we think that is imperfect . That is the waiter’s service.Last Saturday after we finished our tea time and paid for the bill ,the waiter came and ask nicely if we need a taxi ,and then he said “oh ! it might be too expensive for you to take a cab.” This sir made my friend and I felt very bad and uncomfortable.
On this matter ,my personal opinion is that shouldn’t happen in such beautiful place. I’m not sure if I will recommend my friends come to your restaurant in the future. But I hope it won’t happen again. I feel very sorry about this.
Every success in your business
Dear Filex:
Your writing about the Dulan Bay is one of the best I read so far.
Well, I always believe that we should never expect government to do anything. Therefore, nothing government does will disappoint us or discourage us.
Dulan is my new home now. I will do the best to keep Dulan’s charm with many cheap place to stay ( daily rate of NT$ 500 per day ) so people can afford to stay longer to appreciate Dulan’s unique beauty.
Dulan should be a place for long stay, not a place for tourist type stay.
My next project is to find a way to help these artists to settle down in Dulan and “make a living” in Dulan too.
My vision is to have many artists to open their own gallery or workshop with a hostel concept. You have to buy a piece of art or craft to trade the opportunity to stay in their hostel. Of course, these hostel is designed based on the artist’s personal character and aesthetic sensibility.
If you stay for a week, you will get a painting of your choice that is worthy of NT$ 2,500. You don’t pay for the daily rate, but pay for the painting that is equivalent to the room rate. This will guarantee the artist to get pay on their crafts. Of course, all the painting is world class grade, not the cheap mass produced souvenir stuff.
I am brainstorming with my artist’s friend here. I want to start this new type of Gallery and Barter based B&B movement to help these talented artist to realize their dream here in Dulan.
We need to be creative and launch a new movement if we don’t like what we see.
Dulan is calling you.
Be the change,
Ping
Dear Mr.Chu:
Dear Tsai Jung:
You are not a loser. You just need to keep writing in English and reading more English books or blogs.
Thank you. You are the fist one, may be the only one, to submit your home assignment. Everything I did or wrote is for those who are ready. I never expect anyone to hand in Home Assignment. Once a while, I will meet people like you here.
As you know, the essence of this blog is not what I wrote, but the comments that we shared here.
Dulan is a dream place. Again, only for those few who are ready. 🙂
We all left our heart in Dulan. This is why Dulan’s calling will make our life more sensible. We know there is a place where I can be myself and learn from many talented and gifted people there. This longing will make our life in Taipei with a purpose. Why we cannot make Taipei like Dulan within a specific group of people. This is why I launched The Red Room project. Basically, I tried to duplicate the feeling I had at Dulan Sugar Factory Cafe.
Let’s engage the life, instead of escaping it. We can create our own reality.
I want to make a disclosure here too. In the column on PPaper Business, I clearly mentioned that I am a land owner in Dulan. Therefore, the fact that I promote Dulan may sound like I am promoting my investment in Dulan. There is certain amount of conflict interest here. I admit humbly.
Thank you for connecting with me.
Love,
Ping
Dear Kate:
Yes, I remember you. HISstory is one of my favorite songs too.
Kiran is so inspirational , didn’t she. Yes, I saw her TEDxIndia presentation before. Do you know there is TEDxTaipei.com now. Please take a look. Kevin and Jason are two fine young men that inspires lots of young people in Taiwan with their curating of TEDxTaipei. Please contack them and tell them your stories.
Unfortunately, I am not the right person to do the judges. I am a lousy judges. I like everything. 🙂
I also don’t know my scheduel for October too. DfC is a hot subject now. I just want to provide some inspiration for your students, please check the website: http://www.infectingthecity.com/2010/
The concept is to infect the city with arts and creativity. Kiran wanted to infect city with children’s empowerment.
Please say hi to 上官良治 and 李應平 for me.
Keep in touch,
Ping
Dear Mei Ling:
You just made my day.
Yes, sooner or later, we all find our purpose in this life. The purpose does not need big. To raise a responsible kid with critical thinking is a higher purpose to me. We all have to work with what we have on hands. I am lucky enough to do what I can do with what I have. Actually, with what I have now, I should have done more. This is what is on my mind lately. I am working on a way to help me do more at this moment. When I think it through and make it happen, I will share with you all here in my blog.
My daughter graduated from Aveda Institute in Houston. She just loved the experience. She wrote a heartwarming letter to me. She told me that being a hairstylist is the best decision she made in her life. To graduate from Aveda Institute really transformed her. She knows that being a hairstylist, she may not make as much money as her friends working in the bank or hi-tech firm, however, she just loves the lifestyle of a hairstylist. She has more time and every client is her best friend. She gets to spend days with her best friends making them look better and feel better, and, she gets paid to do this. Of course, she is very good with her hands since she was youngl and loves fashion and anything cool. 🙂
Please share with us your learning. Can you join the facebook for Canmeng Institute and share with your colleagues your NYC life and learning stories. http://www.facebook.com/pages/ken-meng-xue-yuan-Canmeng-Institute/253653151760
Yes, you have lots of friends in Taiwan. Pleases let us know if you ever decide to come back to Taiwan.
Love,
Ping

Hi, dear Mr. Chu, it’s 芯瑋 Kate here, don’t know if you still remember me — I was moved by your article on Ppaper Business about Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” and I believe I also shared the lyrics and my reflections on the song “HIStory” of Michael Jackson as well. Do you remember me?
Well, basically there’s this meaningful, global activity that I’m organizing now in Taiwan, and would you like to take a look at what we are doing here? Ah, also, one of the core team member of this activity is 上官良治, one of the people you wrote about in the previous issue of Ppaper Business as well, he co-organized the Haiti 愛心捐款 facebook event.
Alright, here you go….I’d better write in Chinese then. 🙂
Hi,

After all, if not us, who? If not now, when? Right? You must know this 🙂

Dear Mr.Chu,
I am so glad to write this letter to you cuz I heard so much about you in the past 5 years. You’ve been doing lots of great job which influence taiwan and whole environment.I really enjoy reading your article and inspiring philosophy. Thanks for everything.
I believe love and care is to give so I try so hard to become a person who can give.I am so glad to have chance to know Aveda from you.I like beauty, earth care and I bellieve we all can do something for the world. Now I am studying in Aveda Institute of New York which is my dream and I bring lots of blessing to come.Guess what? The representative lady said I am the first student from Taiwan to study here and they are so kind to me.I came here with mission and I wish to share more about my learning from here.
All the best and God bless you.
Best regards,
Mei-Ling
Dear Jiande:
Thank you for attending this invitation only party.
Please respect the time you are on the stage. The Red Room is a space to share what you are passisonate about and to celebrate the creativity and deep listening. However, you need to control your time so other people can share their passion too. I will not allow anyone to abuse this hospitality and reduce the venue to a personal indulgence.
Ping
Dear Tina:
I am sorry that I was very blunt to you.
I cannot learn the lesson for you. You have to learn lesson for yourself.
Remember, you can only depend on yourself. You create your own reality. Never expect someone out there should help you because you are doing such a good and hard work.
It is OK if you cannot join the walk for water, especially, you need money for your own concert. It is the thought that counts.
Good luck,
Ping
Dear Jiande:
Did you see the photos in this blog about the Stage Time and Wine @ Red Room?
Please write to me with your email address. I think I can get you a place to attend this wonderful event so you can mingle with those creative international friends and get a glimpse of how to have fun with intellectural contents.
You can write pretty good English. By joining this blog community, you are, in essence, practicing your English and seeing the world with new eyes.
Be the change,
Ping
Dear ping chu
i see that and it make me excited if i could attend it,thank you for giving me such a wonderful chance ,my email address is dddd494@hotmail.com,please tell me more about that haha^^
Hi, Mr. Chu :
Thank you for your suggestion.
About the part of politeness, I will be more careful next time.
But as a second-grade junior high student, I don’t think we have enough time to get a part-time job or bike around Taiwan.
As for Walk For Water, I once planned to participate in it, but unfortunately, on that day we have to make up for the class we missed in the winter vacation.
I think we might have a second-hand auction or take some simple odd job.
Thank you for the lesson again.
Tina
dear ping chu ,i have heard you speech in taiwan college, you say
one man should go abroad to learn and expand his field of vision,
but i have no enough money,so i hope make friends with foreign friends in taiwan,i think i can learn something different thinking from
them, can you suggest me any way to get this goal, please?
Dear Tina:
Thank you for your postitive words for my talk on AIESEC.
No, I would not sponsor your group’s concert.
First, you mis-used this public forum to request sponsorship. It is a civil etiquette that not imposing on people with your own agenda, regardless how noble or how selfless motive it is.
Second, I never sponsor people that I did not know well.
If I were you, I would encourage all your friends to find a part time job to earn the extra money you need. You also can be creative to raise fund by joining a Walk for Water or biking around Taiwan. ( you can ask people to sponsor $ for each kilometer you walk, run or bike. )
You should launch a movement or business venture through your own hard work before asking anyone’s financial help.
Never ask for hand out or abuse the good will people have.
This is the lesson you should learn now.
Ping
Dear Jing-Lou:
Once a while, I have received email like yours to inspire all readers that we are not alone after all.
I am not here to advocate an idealistic philosophy. I also need profit for my business. Profit is like oxygen. We need profit to sustain our life. The crucial point is what we are going to do with our life. This is the big question.
When student is ready, teacher will show up. In your age, you are still young and you will meet many teachers in your life. I am just your peers who are still learning how to life a life with purpose.
Now, I am focusing on sharing my story or my limited business experience with people who are ready. I don’t waste my time on things that I cannot contribute to.
Thank you for your kind words. As always, it means a lot to me.
I am happy that this blog and PPaper Business is a medium to touch people who want to be the change they want to see in the world.
I am a Daymaker first, Businesmaker second and Ripplemaker third. I made it my personal mission to make people’s day as a way to fulfill my own day with positive emotion.
I strongly recommend you to do so. You should build a business on this philosophy: Make people’s day.
If you do it long enough with authenticity. Profit will follow and you can use profit to change the world by changing things you are passionate about.
If you googled me or had a chance to become a customer of my business, you would find out that it is doable and sustainable.
Be the change,
Ping
Dear Jiande:
If I were you, I will not be friend with someone who does not respect my feeling and my independent spirit.
Again, I am not you. I don’t know your specific situation. The only advice I can give to you is to talk to him directly and keep an open mind to whatever he said.
What kind of businessman he wants to be. Did he dare to run a company with open book management? ( let all his employee knows all the financial report. ) What his life purpose to become a businessman? It is OK to say that he wants to make as much money as he would like and become rich and famous. He just has to be authentic with what he really want to do in his life.
It is your life and you have to make the decision by yourself. I am sorry that I can never learn the lesson for you.
Good luck.
Ping
Dear Mr. Chu,
First of all, thank you.
Thank you for writing columns on PPAPER BUSINESS and therefore delivers enthusiastic and positve ideas to people.Your words are enlightening and meaningful that somehow I see myself growing when consuming the refreshing ideas patched by them. It’s my real pleasure to bump into you in the sea of words. I see myself changing, indeed.
Then, again, thank you.
Thank you again for being a caring businessman. I admire you in a way that being a businessman, you care not only about the profits but more improtantly the pleasure customers gained when consuming.(or more precisely, that you care if the product you sell do a positive effect on the globe.)
I’m 18. The world seemed gray and a bit melancholy or even deadly to me before I get to know you. Ugly corruptions between millionares and politicians, contaminated products sold by hyprocritical business dealers etc and all that pictured a depressing world to me. I know that I shouldn’t be so passive about the community but that’s just how it appeared. It dawned on me a day when I read your column which twisted my ideas toward the word at the spot.
A man can be a businessman and at the same time not to be profit-driven.
And my world seemed to be turn the other way around when I get to realise the idea.
Your being optimistic and positive inspired me and thus I feel grateful about all this.
Thank you.
Little by little, I strongly believe that one day what you did will eventually change the world, and there will be more and more people around the world who carries simple and joy as their doctrines of life.
Jing-Luo
Hi Mr. Chu,
I have a harassment that my best friend want to be a good business man,so he tell me if i do not progress like him,we will estrange in the future,I hope i can be his partner, but i did not know whether the life style i want or not,so how about you thinking if you have the situation?
Dear Terri:
Actually, it may surprise you, there are many people like you out there. They want to be connected but they are afraid of the commitment or the uncomfortable feeling from a new and unfamiliar environment.
Stage Time and Wine @ Red Room is the result of this belief that there must be more people like me and Ayesha who believe in kindness, intellectual stimulation and creative lifestyle.
Thank you for join us to start this movement.
Everyone is a poet. Everyone is a musician, singer, composer. Everyone is a painter. Everyone is a dancer. We just got lost in the education system.
Now, it is time to regain our inner child desire and let the new me floating in the river of creative flow.
Terri, you are my kind of girl. 🙂
See you soon.
Ping
Hi Mr. Chu,
Thank you for these encouraging messages, it made my day.
You are right, we move fast in everyday life, never stop looking carefully and listening to others. It’s always great to know that some are still willing to contribute their time and little creation to make better life.
Looking forward to joining this gathering!
best wishes,
terri
Dear Terri:
First, thank your friend to connect us together.
I am so glad that you are interested in sharing your writing with a fun loving peers.
The Stage Time and Wine @ Red Room is created for lovers of word and sound. Let’s celebrate the intimacy and deep listening together. Yes, it is still a private underground party. However, I always encourage more young people to join this movement to celebrate the amateurism.
We stop listening. It is sad. At the Red Room, you will find that it is great feeling to know that you are not alone, you are no longer lonely either. 🙂
I always believe if we put a bunch of creative people together with wine, magic will happen.
Can you send me your email address so I can put you on the mailing list for next The Stage Time and Wine @ Red Room? My email address: pingc@canmeng.com.tw
No, you are never intruding me or imposing anything. You just take action and create your own reality. 🙂
it would be our honor to hear your writing.
Love,
Ping

Dear Sherri:
Whenever I see someone who eats alone in my Nonzero restaurant, I just cannot help to show my admiration to you. This is part of the reason I open Nonzero. I want to encourage people eat alone at a nice neighborhood restaurant so they can cultivate a lifestyle of their choose.
We also need to nurture a solitude life.
Destiny will find you when you travel alone.
You are a very sweet girl. It is my great pleasure to bump into you that day.
Keep your chin up,
Love,
Ping
Hi Mr. Chu,
A friend of mine forwarded your blog to me and it’s such a pleasure to read your sharing.
I have been doing some writings for years and some of them are posted on my blog. It’s exciting to know that there is such an event for people sharing inner thoughts in this manner. I don’t know if it is possible to join and share my works as well.
I’m fully aware that stage time & wine is a private event, so this message might seem abrupt, sorry about that. But it must be a very good chance to learn from others and experience the chemistry in the event.
Your articles refresh my busy life, thank you and good luck with everything.
best regards,
terri
原來台北有名的NonZero也是伯父所引進的idea;
Mark

Dear A-sam:
Please just call me Mr. Chu. I really don’t have any title except that I am the founder of my company. The day to day operation is given to my very competent team.
Yes, I, from time to time, delete and re-organize some comments that serve no meaningful inspiration to this tribe.
I am so sorry that I am not interested in your subject of interest. You can always write to me if you have any questions.
Thank you.
