Dear Mr. Chu
My name is Calvin Chen. I was a delegate from the AIESEC APXLDS conferece in Kaohsiung. I just arrived home today and immediately felt the urge and need to contact you at once!
I was very impressed by your speech that day and it truly got me thinking! Your concepts on how to live one’s life is truly insprirational and the three “makers” really describe what all people should pursue. I especially liked the part when you said we should always find the thing that we want to change, and the go change it! It was very inspiring. The two quotes you used are now deeply embedded in my heart! “Never doubt a group of thoughtful, responsible citizens that can change the world, ever has it happened!” “Be the change you want to see in the world!”
I also remember the example you mentioned about your own daughter, which leads to the question I never had the chance to ask!
I sincerely wish to follow your advice to go and change things fearlessly! To go and upset somebody! But what if I find no one else to support me? In your example that day, you mention that your daughter wished to start her own club! But trouble was that nobody wanted to join her! In this kind of situation, what should I do? Should I persist and go on by myself and try as hard as I can alone?
Or wait until the time is right and my true companions finally show up?
BTW, I am looking forward to personally take a tour in your wonderful company! Thank you very much~
Calvin
Dear A-SAM:
I really don’t quite understand what you want to say in your English writing. You can always write in Chinese so everyone here can understand what you want to say.
One more thing, I don’t know a lot of things and I don’t think I am the best person to ask about anything related to 靈體.
Thank you.
Ping
Dear Dr.chu
I had a puzzle recently, is I may see the spirit body(靈體), because my 8 years ago start to hit the place, therefore my physique and the nature communicate, the previous earthquake ran many animal spirit body, now I use the common camera to be possible to send the person hair’s on nature work according to leave(稱髮靈or背後靈), did not know that you thought this was useful to the average person? May tell other people? Actually many picture manufacturers have lay out, some people specialized have not only pointed out the concrete shape. (natural spirit meets consciousness because of not to tonsure Shi Huoxi to send technical person to transmit or change)
Dear Vicky:
You are also my daymaker. 🙂
There is nothing happier to me than to know that our guests become our daymaker by acknowledging their gracious kindness to our Daymaker.
I have shared your kind words with my team. I am sure we will find a surprise way to make this daymaker’s day.
Vicky, this is one of my vision to inspire more people like you who are willing to take time to become service provider’s Daymaker. We don’t think customer is king so all service providers should serve guests with no reservation. My service philosophy is that we want to serve selflessly to our guests because it is part of our personal journey to find meaning in life from serving people.
Now, the guests will also need to move up their gracious manner to show their deep appreciation to these service providers. We are all equal in a human to human basis.
We serve because we like to make people’s day. We gave generous kind words to service providers because we think no one should take for granted for other people’s service, even we have paid for.
This is a new and modern attitude we all need to cultivate. Be a daymaker to your service providers.
We never take anything for granted. We empathize people’s feeing.
Thank you, Vicky.
Your kind words have made a lot of people’s day.
My whole team will be recharged by your kind gesture here.
Love,
Ping
Dear A-SAM:
http://www.books.com.tw/exep/prod/booksfile.php?item=0010449615
There is a Chinese translation. I highly recommend this book.
You need to think hard on who your best customers are. Then, you just work hard to over deliver your promise and provide a priceless experience.
The key thing is that you need to be authentic to yourself.
Please follow your heart more than your mind. You have to vote with what you buy so your customers will also vote with what they buy.
Good luck.
Ping
Please don’t be shy to use English as much as you can. You are OK with your English.
Dear A-SAM:
If you know a little bit of formulation for cosmetics, you will notice the complexity and plant based ingredients in Aveda products formulation. Please read the bottle’s English ingredient label closely. Please note the eco friendly packaging and plastic bottle composition. We had 7 products that are certified by Cradle by Cradle Design Certification http://www.c2ccertified.com/
Now, you know authenticity is the brand. There are too many OEM products in the world. With China as world manufacturer, everyone can create a brand by OEM.
I don’t know your business, however, unless you can offer the authentic products, you will not be passionate about your business. It is OK if you are in business only for money. You just need to be honest with yourself.
I think emotional brand is super important in the future. However, it is people that made a brand. It is people who purchase and use the products or services that can create a brand. You did not just buy products, but, buy what the products stand for or if you are agree with the value behind the bottle.
We vote with what we buy.
Canmeng Aveda is not for everyone and we never try to please everyone. You have to visit our office and get to know our team before you know what Canmeng Aveda brand is.
We are the only salon/spa that offer team based pay, not commission in Taiwan. Please take a moment to think why we don’t use commission to reward our hairstylists. Why are these hairstylists willing to join Canmeng Aveda with team based salary? Please have a hair service in our salon and find out yourself. 🙂
Please purchase the best seller book: Knack (師父) I wrote a recommendation on my PPaper Business column.
I wish you the best in your business.
Ping
PS. Please forgive me to remove your English writing because it may mislead your meaning in your Chinese writing.
Dear A-SAM:
🙂
Thank you for your kind words.
One day you will find out that there is no accident to any continue success. Again, everyone has different definition for success. I certainly don’t think I am successful. I made many mistakes and had my share of failures too.
The important thing is that I never took failure as personal. If you read my blog carefully. I had a thing called no lose life philosophy. We never encounter failure, we just learn some hard lessons. I just learned when to quit and move on. I believe there are enough success for everyone to enjoy. As long as I am always curious and want to make a difference in whatever I am interested in, I know I am enjoying the journey.
Of course, you need to be a world class businessmaker first. You need to read the cutting edge books and get yourself familiar with the coolest development in the Web. No one can ignore the mobile e-commerce from now on. The business model has to change every three years or less. Consumers’ lifestyle is changing and the way they use products and service is changing too. We have to know how our most loyal customers use our products and our services.
Not many people knew that I started a audio streaming e-learning business in 1996, the same time as Canmeng Aveda. I am always fascinating about the high tech. I sold this java based e-learning platform company to the management team at a complete lose eventually.
I have explored Internet movement ever since 1994 while I am still a student of Harvard Business School. I still remember I used Mosaic as browser in 1994. Mosaic became Netscape and the rest is history.
Yes, I have paid my due to become who I am.
You are still young so you will have much more time ahead of you to be the best you can be.
Please don’t be envious of anyone. You need to start to pay your due now, today.
🙂
Good luck to you. Thank you for joining this tribe.
Love,
Ping

Dear Yvonne:
Professor Shih is my new hero. She really wants to help our young students to see things differently. Professor Shi is more than qualified with her brilliant career path to teach us how to run a global prestigious brand. I think we are very lucky to have her to inspire our youth to know what a true luxury means.
Happy Holiday,
Ping
Dear Mr. Chu,
Thank you for your help!
Professor Shih just wants students to search this book via internet, to read any thing about this book but not read this whole book.
Althoug there is no chinese edition for our students to read, i believe this concept already enter their mind.
Best regards
Yvonne

As Shell has proved that the hunt for cheap products had hurt us all.
I don’t know if there is Chinese translation out there yet.
Thank you and professor Shih for showing interest in this book. It is a good book to read for all enlightened consumers.
Love,
Ping
Dear Mr. Chu,
I am Yvonne, from Chinese Culture University. You’ve spoke to our students on 11/14. In your speech, you talked about a book “discount society”. Professor Shih wants to assign this book for students to read, but I couldn’t find this book via internet. May I confirm the name of this book with you?
Best regards,
Yvonne
Dear Katie:
First, PPaper is Mr. Pao’s brilliant work. I cannot take the credit to make PPaper a phenomena in Taiwan’s publishing business. I did have the very first interview session with him on PPaper 01 issue though.
Mr. Pao is a graphic artist with great business mind too. The only advice i gave him was to be focus and not to be everything to everywhere. He is on his way to become an iconic role model. 🙂 I am very proud of his success.
I still have passion with magazine though. This is why Mr. Pao went to me and asked me to support him to launch his PPaper fist place. PPaper’s success is due to the brilliance of Mr. Pao to believe in himself, seize the opportunity and take action.
I still remember the first time when he shared his dream at my Canmeng office. I told him that he will make it because he has prepared this venture all his life. Of course, he has a brilliant wife as his sounding board and curator.
10 reasons for PPaper’s success:
1. Great product with limited production cost. It leveraged Mr. Pao’s existing graphic design team so he can minimize the dependence from outside design talents.
2. Mr. Pao created a new readership—young students who are interested in design and anything that is design related.
3. Focus on international news and stories about designers and design brands.
4. Bold strategy on retail sales, not on ad revenue or subscription at the beginning.
5. NT$ 49.00 as an impulsive purchase items.
6. By tapping into 7-11 distribution channel and the desire that 7-11 wanted to upgrade the cool factor in design magazine, especially in young teens who are 7-11’s main customer base.
7. Great layout and visual stimulating pictures for the unique reading experience.
8. It matches the lifestyle of young people: cool, new, international and short attention span. Short info at a rapid fire speed.
9. Interview with world renown designers through Mr. Pao’s powerful network.
10. His wife’s copy writing brilliance.
Mr. Pao’s business venture is a great case study to creative people who wants to move up the food chain. Who can be a better magazine publisher than a graphic designer and copy writer? Who can be a better real estate developer than an architect? Who can be a better grocery store owner than a chef? Who can be a better brand builder than a ad agency?……Now, you got the picture.
OK, for your magazine project. I would suggest you to do some research on the following two websites:
http://www.thesatorialist.com
http://www.garancedore.fr/en
These style hunters on street fashion with their blogs is the future of any fashion related business.
I am sure you will learn from Mr. Pao’s brilliance and The Satorialist and come up with a new magazine that can integrate virtual and physical world.
Good Luck,
Ping
Dear Jessica:
Thank you for Your kind words. It took courage to leave a comment here. I want to apologize to you and all my Canmeng team as i did not spend much time with you. As you all know that I did not handle the day to day operation in Canmeng Aveda.
I have great pride to Canmeng Team. Now, they are more competent than me to run the day to day business. I have also learned a lot from them.
I will definitely spend sometime with you and your team when I visit Kaoshiung next time.
Please be a Daymaker to all the guests who allow us to serve them. To be able to serve is the noblest thing one human being can do.
Be the change,
Ping
Dear Mr.Chu
this is Kaite, first of all, nice to meet you here, and i love your article mostly, i would never be able to write that…:(, but since you and Mr. P has launched the PPaper design magazine..how do you guys cross the barriers?i am a student who are now doing course on fashion communication in UK, and im final year now, my final project is about to create a magazine..and i found it soooooooo hard, there are a lot things going around on my mind, but i just couldnt find my way out to decide what to focus on….as you are a successful business man, would you be able to give me some guideline about how to create a magazine? well..mine, is gonna be a bilingual magazine based on young generation culture…

Dear Milly:
First, I think you need to be your own Daymaker by accepting the fact that you need to move on and engage yourself with something you are passionate. You also need to expand your network of friends by traveling alone or doing some volunteer work.
if a man told you he needs time to think about the relationship, the best thing you can do is to let it go and move on. I know it is easier said than done. However, it is actually not so hard to do once you make the decision.
I am sure your boy friend is painful to end this relationship too. It requires courage to be honest with his own feeling too. Actually, you should thank him for sending such a clear signal so you two can still be friend. It is a tough love, sometime.
He is just not that into you. You can make someone into the person that you want them to be, but if they do not treat you the way you want to be treated, You should move on, immediately.
This is what you should do: Call him and thank him for being so honest with his feeling. You still want to be his friend only when he is ready. Only now, you decided to move on and have a new life for yourself.
Thank you for mentioning my 1% philosophy. I can see you are a frequent readers for my blog. I am blessed with the best team anyone could hope for. I will tell my team how supportive you are for what we have been doing.
Please say hi to your boy friend. 🙂
Love you,
Ping
Dear
Daymaker,
Daymaker:)
Dear Michael:
Thank you for letting me know your daymaking experience.
I also want you to know that you should continue to learn how to express yourself with English. You are doing just fine. Please practice more with English writing.
Daymaking is a choice and a habit. The secret is to live in the moment and practice daymaking all the time. Before you know it, Daymaking becomes part of your personality and charisma.
Daymaker is a happy person by choice.
Ping
DEAR MR.CHU
After read Ppaper Business 08 “daily maker”,I try to do something different in my life.
First day after read PPB i took a taxi, i call taxi driver MR. Chiang , he was really happy, I found I have a little power can change this world.
I change my mine to help some one who need help, and try to told they , that they can make world different too.
Thanks you Mr.CHU I will do my best.
Dear Tim:
First, I want to thank you for your honest and passionate comments on Nonzero.
Thank you for pointing out these critical points which are the essence of why I want to start Nonzero. We will definitely do some soul searching to re-invent Nonzero.
Actually, we cannot rely on training to invoke the passion from Nonzero team for food and priceless service, especially, Nonzero is not a chef owned restaurant.
Nonzero is my most expensive experiment that we can find a team, like my Canmeng Aveda, who can serve from heart, not from the conventional wisdom of how I can be financially benefit from it ( commission based pay ). It is the spirit of Daymaking in a business environment.
I just want to prove that there is another possibility to run a successful restaurant other than chef owned restaurant. I believe in people’s noble feeling to be part of new movement and attain self actualized. Everyone told me we are a product of selfish gene so we cannot be too idealistic to trust people will manage themselves based on no extrinsic incentives.
I just think we can broaden this selfish gene if we can create a transparent ecosystem. Canmeng and Canbran are my testimonials that, with continual self reflection and re-invention, people, deep inside, want to do a good job with higher purpose.
Canlove Nonzero is having this challenge because we never really demand our team to change on their own term. ( If they refuse to change, they choose to leave us when they see better opportunity.)
I have asked my Canmeng team leader, Winnie, to be in charge of the re-invention of the Nonzero team. It will have some rough ride along the way. However, it is part of the growing pains.
Once again, I think you have given me the best gift today. I simply cannot thank you enough.
You are absolutely right on the mission of Nonzero. We are not here to offer the three Michelin stars food or some most creative food created by celebrity chef. Nonzero will constantly offer interesting, healthy, tasty and simple food. We are not in the business for claiming most expensive or exclusive food. We are in the business of a new healthy lifestyle.
I only have some reservation on telling people the story about food. I think this great concept to introduce food with personalized stories has been abused. It is almost if you can tell a good story, you can sell anything. This is the wrong approach. The story should be the person, the team and the guests of the restaurant, not just the food. The ingredient stories have been overrated if there were no personal first hand experience. This is why, in the States, you only buy organic food from the growers you know, not the certified organic label or the stories told by earnest waiters or chefs.
I decided to use Pierre Loisel’s ( my personal hero ) Pun inspired organic food whenever it is available. I don’t emphasize that Nonzero is an organic restaurant, however, we do pay special attention to where we buy our ingredients from.
I also agree with you that we should provide the best coffee available. I used to trust our team to source the best and freshest roasted coffee from friends. We are also thinking about sourcing from Fair Trade Coffee too.
Tim, may I thank you one more time for your timely comments.
Finally, I think Taipei deserves to have a restaurant like Nonzero. Nonzero also deserves a chance to prove that she is authentic.
Please call Winnie at 2721-7909 and schedule a meeting with Nonzero team.
Be the change,
Ping
Ripplemaker
I Have a Dream!
而現在的我希望自己能有機會make my dream come true
Nonzero
Tim
PS.
Dear Abraham:
Thank for dropping by here. Spend some time here and browse around. Hopefully, you will find something you are interested.
You are a wonderful group with a very good leadership and organizer. I am so sorry i might talk too much and too long that evening.
I only pray if there is one thing i talked that click with your. i think I did a good job already.
Please say hi to your 51 club members.

Dear Kate:
Wow, I feel I am very close to you now.
I also love HIStory. I spent last 20 minutes to view Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_2h454vSm4&feature=related
I agree with you that HIStoy is one of Michael’s master pieces. I also know that he was most proud of this song too.
Thanks for the lyrics. It is a powerful and emotional charged lyrics.
Every day create your history
Every path you take you’re leaving your legacy
Every soldier dies in his glory
Every legend tells of conquest and liberty
Every day create your history
Every page you turn you’re writing your legacy
Every hero dreams of chivalry
Every child should sing together in harmony”
I learn something about Shamone too. Thank you. I like you interpretation too. How wonderful the idea is to create a word that you can use in any situation.
It is strange that people can relate to each other in a special way simply moved by a song. I think this is one of the reasons that MySpace is so popular before the FaceBook.
Kate, thank you for sharing your emotional side with me. We shall meet in person one day.
Please continue to share with us here about your love of music.
MJ is free now, no one can judge him anymore.
Shining eyes,

Dear 怡秀, Fire Starter:
Thank you for taking time to share with your insight about building a brand.
Actually, no company or even no one man can build a brand. Brand are built by the dialogue among the user group. It is the conversation between the users that can create a true brand.
I usually tell people how to judge a company, never by the charismatic of the founder or the beautiful story created around the brand. You did one thing absolutely right by finding out Canmeng Aveda’s reward system. We decided that people cannot be motivated by extrinsic factors only. People inspired by the intrinsic value. The simply reason that we decided to have team based pay, instead of the commission based pay, is that we want to drive out fear from our work. Commission pay usually is a distrust system based on people’s selfish drive to make the most for themselves first. You did not know that we have two more simple system to create a trust based culture: open book management and 20% profit sharing. In essence, all Canmeng team members are 20% of company owner even legally they are not. They share 20% of what ever our profit is.
There are another important factor to judge a company’s brand: who is their accounting firm? Canmeng Aveda use PriceWaterhouseCooper (PWC), top four accounting firm in the world.
If a small company like us can use PWC as her accounting firm, you know the integrity of the company and not be fooled by the beautiful story for the brand.
Next time, when you want to know how good a company is, especially for small business. All you need to look is to see what kind of accounting firm they are using for their tax and financial report.
Do they have a transparent finance report to their team? How do they reward their team?
Branding is one of my favorite topics too. Brand is a conversation among consumers. Brand is intimately relate to the user experience. Brand is the intimacy, love and sensuality.
Please continue to study Canmeng Aveda and see how we build brand together.
Give Love,
Ping

Dear Ping Chu,
I am thankful that I grabbed a copy of Ppaper Business on my way to I-Lan two days ago. While my friends were sleeping and chatting on the way there, I being the only one sitting with another stranger, read your book and was astonished by your words. It was about Michael Jackson, about Man in the Mirror! Believe it or not, Man in the Mirror has been my favorite song of his, and the reason is simple — the lyrics are amazing. I remember that I was so happy that someone (esp. someone as important as you) out there share the same feeling as i do. I felt so warm 🙂 So i had to write to you to express my feelings and, like you said, to communicate with you. Without communication, there will be no change. 🙂
Well, except for telling you how i felt connected to your words, I should give out something as well. I looked up the lyrics of your magazine, and I found some mistakes. Mainly trivial though, so don’t worry. 🙂 But I think you should know that Michael Jackson sang “Shamone (or some spell Jamone)” instead of “come on” in the end of the song. It was a word he invented, actually meaning “come on (with a twist of pronunciation)” or “everything”, literally anything you want it to be. What a amusing idea, isn’t it? A word in English that has no definite meaning. I think it shows MJ’s heart — unlimited and free. But it’s just my interpretation, haha. Whether you already knew it or not, I am honored to tell you in person 🙂
Last but not least, i want to show you another song by MJ, which is deeply meaningful as well. It’s called “HIStory.” Now, note that it’s not the remix version or the album name. It’s called “HIStory” and it’s about 6 and an half minutes long. The song is inspiring and historical in its own way — styles changing constantly from pop to marching band to choir, also, serveral sayings by the great icons in American History are included, like JFK, Martin Luther King, Neil Armstrong and so on… it was a powerful song with simple yet beautiful lyrics. I want to share them with you.
He got kicked in the back
He say that he needed that
He hot willed in the face
Keep daring to motivate
He say one day you will see
His place in world history
He dares to be recognized
The fires deep in his eyes
How many victims must there be
Slaughtered in vain across the land
And how many struggles must there be
Before we choose to live the prophet’s plan
Everybody sing…
Every day create your history
Every path you take you’re leaving your legacy
Every soldier dies in his glory
Every legend tells of conquest and liberty
Don’t let no one get you down
Keep movin’ on higher ground
Keep flying until
You are the king of the hill
No force of nature can break
Your will to self motivate
She say this face that you see
Is destined for history
How many people have to cry
The song of pain and grief across the land
And how many children have to die
Before we stand to lend a healing hand
Everybody sing…
Every day create your history
Every path you take you’re leaving your legacy
Every soldier dies in his glory
Every legend tells of conquest and liberty
Every day create your history
Every page you turn you’re writing your legacy
Every hero dreams of chivalry
Every child should sing together in harmony
All nations sing
Let’s harmonize all around the world
How many victims must there be
Slaughtered in vain across the land
And how many children must we see
Before we learn to live as brothers
And leave one family oh…
Every day create your history
Every path you take you’re leaving your legacy
Every soldier dies in his glory
Every legend tells of conquest and liberty
Every day create your history
Every page you turn you’re writing your legacy
Every hero dreams of chivalry
Every child should sing together in harmony
A soldier dies
A mother cries
The promised child shines in a baby’s eyes
All nations sing
Let’s harmonize all around the world
Hope you like the song. (If you can’t find it or you don’t own the CD, I can send it to you :))
All the best to you, your family and the magazine. It’s good to know that great ideas are shared and spread around this beautiful island. I’ll keept supporting you 🙂
