Ripple Room gathering, something happened that I will always remember.

A girl who was learning the violin knew, before deciding to attend, that she might not yet be ready to share her music. She had thought about it for a long time.

She wanted to tell us about the step she was taking after a long period of avoidance—encouraged by me, Guang, and the community she had found in Ripple Room.

Once onstage, fear still overwhelmed her. For five minutes, she could not speak. Then she cried and began to tell us how frightened she was.

The silence felt like forever.

The Time Was Still Hers

I thought our host, Insay, did an excellent job. She let her own those five minutes. She did not rush to fill the silence with comforting words or treat her with condescension.

All thirty Ripple Roomers sat on the carpet and stayed with her until she gradually came through that wave of panic.

Looking back, my friends and I had encouraged her to share something of herself. That evening, she chose to begin with her fear. What we could offer was time, and our presence as she found her words.

Those five minutes still belonged to her. We stayed with her through them.

Tolerance, Compassion, and Love in Practice

I think of these words, often attributed to Rumi:

“Listen with the ear of tolerance, see through the eyes of compassion, speak with the language of love.”

That evening gave those words a deeper meaning for me. Tolerance meant allowing her own pace. Compassion meant taking her fear seriously. Love could be thirty people sitting quietly and staying.

This is the spirit I want for Ripple Room: whoever steps onstage receives our wholehearted support, tolerance, compassion, and love. Nobody needs to prove they can perform well before they belong.

At the end of the evening, I walked onstage and gave her an embrace. I told her she was the most courageous person in the room that night, and asked her to come back next time.

She hoped that one day she could return and share the sound of her violin with everyone.

Who knows?
